Scheduling is a famously hard problem.

That's why you need a constraint solver.

Ten doctors, covering one call slot a day, over thirty days is 10³⁰ possible schedules.

10³⁰ is 140 times more atoms than there are in the human body. A computer checking a billion schedules a second would take thirty trillion years to work through them all.

Then there are the rules. No call on vacation, even weekends, maximum time between calls, W-2s get their contracted amount while partners fill in the remainder fairly. It’s a lot.

A person does this in a weekend. Once dialed in, a solver does it in about a minute, honors every rule and maximizes fairness.
